When it Comes to 5G, The Next Big Thing is Pretty "Small"

June 8, 2016

Telecom giant AT&T has outlined its continuing small cell plans for 5G. In this article from AGL, AT&T president Krish Prabhu claimed that small cells are shaping up to be a “key element” in future architectures.  Turns out, the next big thing is pretty "small."

It looks like small cells and DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) will both find more deployments in tomorrow’s network.  In many cases, DAS is the better solution for indoor coverage when the building is larger.  Small cells might provide coverage in smaller sites or where there are likely to be dense concentrations of people.  There are still huge barriers to small cell adoption.  These tend not to be technical, but more having to do with access.  For instance, just getting permits to place small cells can be exceeding difficult.

When it comes down to it, there are a lot of potential technologies in the 5G world, but actual deployment and monetization aren't quite clear. Still, the idea gets us excited!
