The United States Marine Corps ups original order.
In addition to the six of such systems already in development, the United States Marine Corps has ordered an additional nine GaN G/ATOR systems from Northrop Grumman.
The G/ATORs, short for Ground/Air Task Orientated Radar is a being touted as a next-generation Surveillance and Defense Radar. The systems will eventually be used for a number of applications, Northrop Grumman reports:
“These nine additional systems and all subsequent G/ATOR systems incorporate advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology…. [GaN’s] higher output power can substantially increase threat detection and tracking ranges for all four G/ATOR mission capabilities: air surveillance, weapon cueing, counter-fire target acquisition and air traffic control.”
The first set of these G/ATOR systems are scheduled to be delivered on or around February 2017.
