While its final form is taking shape, there is really one thing to say about 5G: It’s coming and it’s coming fast. A recent study by ABI Research claims that services within the 5G range will ultimately bring in over $200 billion in revenue by the year 2026. Via Microwave Journal:
“While the global LTE subscriber base will continue to grow in the immediate future as operators evolve to LTE-A Pro networks, it will likely soften in developed markets when 5G deployments take off,” says Khin Sandi Lynn, Industry Analyst at ABI Research. “In 2026, the LTE portfolio will remain the dominant mobile technology, representing more than 50% of worldwide mobile subscriptions, while the 5G subscriber base will grow to account for close to 5% of the market’s total.”
While a major source of that growth is estimated to be sourced largely from North American and Asian territories, 5G is looking to be a global race among providers. Companies such as Verizon, Qualcomm, and Ericsson have all been dabbling with the future tech.
