Are You Getting the Most from Your Spectrum Analyzer?

June 27, 2016

A spectrum analyzer is just one important tool in your testing arsenal. While Electro Rent makes sure every instrument is in tip-top shape when it is delivered to you, there are some techniques you can use to get the most out of your spectrum analyzer.

  1. Understand your limitations. It’s incredibly important to have your scan rate within range for the spectrum analyzer to give an accurate result. Too slow of a scan rate can yield undesirable measurement times. On the other hand, a scan rate that is too fast can miss important milestones and other details.
  2. Don’t skip the calibration. When you receive a spectrum analyzer, it should be calibrated for use. In addition to this, each unit has a simpler, onboard self-test or calibration procedure. It is imperative that the end user runs the test each time the instrument is powered on. If you feel your instrument is out of calibration, contact the point of purchase to see if they have calibration capabilities.
  3. Find the Sweet Spot. Frequency can be set by either selecting a center frequency, or a band by selecting upper and lower frequency limits. Gain can be adjusted using the RF attenuator and IF gain controls to keep the signal within the calibrated scale of the display screen. The two controls are used together to avoid inaccuracies.

With these tips in mind, you’re one step closer to getting the most accurate measurement possible. You’d be amazed what a little prep can do for your test!
